Discovery of a Transient X-Ray Pulsar, AX J1841.0−0536, in the Scutum Arm Region with ASCA

چکیده
We report on the discovery of a transient X-ray pulsar, AX J1841.0−0536, serendipitously found in the Scutum arm region with the ASCA in two separate observations. The X-ray flux is very faint at the beginning, but exhibits two flares in the second observation. The flare flux increases by a factor 10 within only ∼1 hr. Coherent pulsations with a period of 4.7394±0.0008 s were detected in the brightest flare phase. The X-ray spectra in the quiescent and flare phases were fitted with an absorbed power-law model with a photon index ∼ 1 plus a narrow Gaussian line at the center energy of 6.4 keV. The interstellar column density of ∼ 3× 10 cm may indicate that AX J1841.0−0536 is located at a tangential point of the Scutum arm at ∼ 10 kpc distance. The coherent pulsations, large flux variability and the spectral shape suggest that AX J1841.0−0536 is a Be/X-ray binary pulsar.

Could AX J1841.00536 be an antimagnetar?
Recent observations show that supergiant fast X-ray transients (SFXTs) spend most of their lifetime at an intermediate level luminosity of∼1033–1034 erg−1, and, when a blackbody model for the spectra is adopted, the resulting radii of the emission region are always only a few hundred metres, supporting the idea that during the intermediate state SFXTs are accreting matter from the companion sta...
متن کاملMonitoring Supergiant Fast X–ray Transients with Swift. Results from the first year
The advent of Swift has allowed, for the first time, the possibility to give Supergiant Fast X–ray Transients (SFXTs), the new class of High Mass X–ray Binaries discovered by INTEGRAL, non serendipitous attention throughout most phases of their life. In this paper we present our results based on the first year of intense Swift monitoring of four SFXTs, IGR J16479−4514, XTE J1739−302, IGR J17544...
متن کاملXMM-Newton observations of the Small Magellanic Cloud: XMMU J004814.1-731003, a 25.55 s Be/X-ray binary pulsar
Aims. To investigate candidates for Be/X-ray binaries in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC), we observed a region around the emission nebula N19 with XMM-Newton in October 2006. Methods. We analysed the EPIC data of the detected point sources to derive their spectral and temporal characteristics. Results. We detected X-ray pulsations with a period of 25.550(2) s from the second-brightest source i...
متن کاملDiscovery of the Slowest X-Ray Pulsar in the SMC, AX J0049.5−7323, with ASCA
The discovery of coherent pulsations with ASCA from an X-ray source, AX J0049.5−7323, is reported. The barycentric period was determined to be 755.5± 0.6 s, which is the longest among X-ray pulsators in the SMC. The X-ray spectrum has been found to be unchanged through ASCA observations, with a photon index of ∼ 0.8 and a luminosity of ∼ 5× 10 erg s (0.7–10 keV). Archival data of the Einstein a...
متن کاملPSR J2021+3651: A Young Radio Pulsar Coincident with an Unidentified EGRET Gamma-ray Source
We report on a deep search for radio pulsations toward five unidentified ASCA X-ray sources coincident with EGRET g-ray sources. This search has led to the discovery of a young and energetic pulsar using data obtained with the new Wideband Arecibo Pulsar Processor. PSR J2021 3651 is likely associated with the X-ray source AX J2021.1 3651, which in turn is likely associated with the COS B high-e...
